Okay, so just in case this is the first time you’ve ever actually seen me. I am a doctor of Chiropractic a doctor of cause board certified in sports medicine with heavy emphasis and foundational medicine. You may actually be more familiar with this as what people call functional medicine.
So what I’m going to share with you today is kind of how I got to this place. Why did I decide to go down this path and and kind of where what? Why is this what is feeling the passion that I have which is really I just want to help people get well restore their health give quality of life back.
So without further Ado, let’s just jump right on into this. So this story essentially well we’re going to begin. It is back when I was in Middle School getting ready to go in high school. And at this point in time was very competitive athlete. I played softball volleyball golf tennis valleys happen.
And I also did some piano lessons to balance it out and academics were incredibly important to me moving in high school is when I had to decide okay, love all these things that I’m doing. What am I going to really be competitive? And so I essentially put all my extracurricular activities except for softball and at that point in time got involved on being tournament teams and traveling outside of the State playing softball every weekend basically practicing six days a week.
I had a um I was catcher so I had a catching coach and I went with my pictures to their pitching coaches. I had a batting coach all outside of like regular practice and then playing games so six days a week year round softball was my life and like I said academics really important. I was never a 4.0 student but I always opted and like strive for that so incredibly important but what most people didn’t know is I was very very sick kid and going into my sophomore year in high school.
I been battling with chronic sinus infections for years already at this point in time. I had seen my pediatrician more times than I could ever even count or remember went to several different ear nose throat doctors even went to allergy specialist and Asthma specialist had the Dreadful allergy testing done not once but twice just to make sure that really I was not allergic to anything and.
The last doc that I was gonna see before I went on Christmas break in 94 was an internist and up until that point. I had been medicated the whole entire time. I had numerous CT scan. So extra radiation to the brain area, which is not great, especially in a developing human. And it just lots and lots of medication.
So if you to the internus the intern is still saying it’s your sinuses, you know, I don’t know why you’re not responding. So let’s just give me more drugs at this point. I was on six medications the internist head bumped up my antibiotics to not one but two but also strength wise much more powerful and potent antibiotics, and then I also was on a mucus Center.
Hmm, and you can just didn’t and steroids prednisone Dreadful Dreadful. Stuff for I don’t even know how many times I had been on that over the last number of years which again one of the worst drugs anybody could go on but a developing growing. Adolescent bad idea especially messing with hormones really bad idea going through school and being teenager as we all know is already like horrific and you’re awkward and quirky and life is just grant throwing all these health issues and you know just not feeling great at this point in time.
I had horrific headaches which is why they also had to be on painkillers. I would be the six medication. I could only handle going to school for half of a day. My headaches were more migraines. Headaches so the longer that I was there then eventually my vision would change and words will pop out of pages and lots of blurriness and just way more amplification of that pain so dealing with that and then High let’s just mess with your hormones because there are not already messed with enough when you’re a teenager and so your skin is breaking out and because your body’s like sick and like everything’s really rest up there not just like normal little pimples.
They’re just like oozing out of your face awesome. It makes for really confident and secure teenage. Teenager not even teenage girl teenage boys, whatever like not good. It’s just not good. So at any rate Christmas break was rolling around and this was the new treatment protocol that I was put on and upon my return.
They said if I wasn’t any better IV antibiotics, we’re going to be the next step which none of those are great. Those are super nasty bad stuff. And then if that didn’t take care of it then they only like Last Resort option was sinus surgery and that way there’s no guarantee with any of these potential treatment protocols that they would actually have taken care of my problem and it was at that point where my family’s like.
Holy cow. Wait this girl. She’s 14 and she is already looking at having to have surgery. Like what does the rest of life look like is one thought and the other thought is honestly there’s got to be some other way. Literally, there’s a big problem here, and I don’t know that surgery and IV antibiotics or the route that they wanted to put me through.
Thank God they didn’t and thank God that time. My grandparents were wondering down in Arizona. My papa was having some back issues and one of his brothers told him, you know, you might want to try Chiropractic and back in the day of the Yellow Pages. That’s where my papa referred to and he picked out probably one of the best I call him more of a Pioneer in our profession who helped pave the way for the rest of us who followed him.
His name’s dr. John Brimhall. So my papa started seeing him for back pain, but because of dr. John being the type of Chiropractic physician that he is he didn’t just. Do manual adjusting he looked at the whole body. He was very into nutrition and diet and just really doing a better job of. Taking care of people so through that he found out that my papa was having some GI issues got problems and he started helping him with that.
So obviously it would only make sense that my papa would tell dr. John about me and my situation and because I was coming down there. Dr. Downs like bring her in. Let’s see what we can figure out see if we can get our any help. So that’s what I did. I went to Arizona and I. I felt like I kind of moved in with dr.
John into his office. I was there for numerous hours a day because they were trying to you know crunch in as much as they could of good for this poor broken down Sick body of mine before I was returning back home to go back to school, you know within the week. So what I found out when I went to dr.
John was that my sinuses those were just the weak spots in my system. They were what was vulnerable it was not wear the. My problem was and who knows if that’s where the cause of the problem began, but at this point that is not what the cause my problem was. I had what people now are becoming much more familiar with of something known as leaky gut and what that means is that my gut my intestines and all that stuff that’s supposed to be your first line of defense that protects you from the outside world and whatever you’re putting into your body.
It was broken. It wasn’t working the way that it should and if you’re on a medication, I guarantee your guts not working the right way either. Not you have symptoms of that. There’s just no way. Medications are incredibly hard, especially we know antibiotics destroy the gut the microbiome this whole other like universe that lives within your gut and actually has everything to do with your immune system everything to do with that your brain function and everything else in your body.
So that’s where my problem was. It was not working the way that it was supposed to it was leaking toxins back into my body which were attacking my weak spot my sinuses. So what does that mean? What that means is if I hadn’t. Dr. John, I would have gone back to Colorado still sick and they would have put me on IV antibiotics which by the way would have only killed my gut that much more so I would have still been sick and then I would have had sinus surgery which also would have not worked because it’s not where the cause of the problem.
They were purely just treating symptoms and who knows what my life would look like right now had I not met dr. John. Leading into meeting. Dr. John before that. I already knew I wanted to go into medicine. I was very drawn to that even though at that point in time. It wasn’t having the answer I needed.
I just knew I really wanted to help people feel well and not have to suffer and figure out what their issues are so that they could just live life. Well when I met dr. John. I had my eyes open to this whole other world of medicine that I had no idea existed and I knew at that point in time. I was going to become a chiropractor because I wanted to do what he was doing for me.
I wanted to be able to give that back. I wanted to be able to help people in that kind of way. So what happened while I was there with? Dr. John was obviously as I’ve mentioned Not Just Chiropractic. I mean I had Chiropractic I had cranial-sacral I had acupuncture. I had all these other modalities just trying to take care of the body and unwind you know.
Years of trauma that I’ve done to it and so on but the other piece that was what really got me. Well, they did all kinds of different testing dark field microscopy and blood work applied Kinesiology all kinds of different ways to test and evaluate to see essentially are the organ systems doing what they’re supposed to what nutrients am I lacking what foods in my sensitive to this that and the other thing which by the way food sensitivity terrible.
I had a page and a half. Single spacing of foods, I couldn’t eat and they were the big guys and this is back in 94. Like I wasn’t allowed to eat any gluten back in 94 and gluten-free wasn’t a thing. So that was like alarming which by the way being softball player being an athlete still back in the old school of thought of like carb low carb low carb load.
You can’t even say that fast. Try it once carb load and here I was living on. Vegetables and meats, but I always had pasta and at lunchtime at school. I would always have a bagel. So who’s putting in a tons of gluten, which I was sensitive to which gluten whether you’re sensitive to it or not. It’s stressful on the gut.
It causes inflammation. So I was irritating my God even more with the types of foods that I was putting into my system. So we had to completely revamp my diet which back then. I essentially went grain-free and was eating a lot more good fats and clean meat and lots of vegetables minimal on fruits sounds very much.
Like what I’m still doing right now. It sounds very much like the mass movements that are going around with paleo or just even keto more to the extreme but staying away from carbohydrates. It’s ultimately when I look back if you want to summarize what I was really sensitive to it was all the foods that.
Had much higher carbohydrate content to them and have higher glycemic values meaning they’re going to spike your blood sugar much higher than a food that has a lower glycemic value or they will also increase the glucose load essentially just keeping your blood glucose higher for a longer period of time.
So editing right here. My mom and I are sitting in the grocery store on the floor reading ingredients because nobody handed me a list to say, here’s what you’re going to eat and oh, by the way, Here are all the different places that you’re going to find gluten or these other grains or soy or corn or like high fructose corn syrup then everything guys.
If you don’t know start reading them the labels, so we had to educate ourselves severely that was a painstaking process smells like, oh my gosh what I’m going to feed this kid, let me hold the obviously figured it out. I’m still here, but we had major changes to my diet main point being it is the number one.
Do you want to thank that number one medicine be a good or bad and you make the choice multiple times every single day and what I was doing was adding fuel to the fire that was going on in my system. So we completely had to change that now nobody is capable of perfect diet. I hate to break it to you.
You’re not and it’s okay. We don’t have to be. But even if I was capable of a perfect diet when your body is sick and things are not working the way that they’re supposed to there are certain nutrients that it’s going to need in a much higher quality than what you could get out of the most perfect diet.
So guess what I was on a lot of. A lot but I had been sick for years. So kind of makes sense and I did homeopathic remedies like all kinds of different things to try to help feed my body what it needed to help it heal while I was taking away all the offender’s, you know, changing up my diet which ultimately goal is get most of your nutrients from your diet.
It is impossible to get all of them anymore. Now for various reasons that I will sit save for a later date promise that will be coming on a show. But yeah goal is feed the body what it needed through food and nutrition start taking nutrition away. Once things had healed up and maintain it for my diet.
So we did a lot of that and we found a chiropractor out here in Colorado who did very similar techniques and treatments and testing to what dr. Brimhall did that way. I could still carry on because I did need some Chiropractic and let’s see that was in 94. It’s oh, I didn’t even tell you like the best most gruesome part of all this is a gross super gross.
So one of the techniques that actually there were two one of the procedures we shall call it is kind of like a non-invasive almost sinus surgery procedure. It’s comprised of two different techniques that chiropractors can do ones known as nasal specific which helps to align the different passes ways.
You have 3 on both sides. Can get whacked out so we align those I’m going to spare you the details because some of you might be a bit squeamish and I don’t need anybody gagging in the background right now. And then the other part is the part. That was much more. Gruesome the Endo nasal technique.
For you basically get to the back of the throat and the eustachian tubes which are from your ears drain back there. Well, if you have chronic like post nasal drip stuff happening everything gets inflamed and they can swell shut and then that just makes the congestion in the head and not being able to filter things through that much worse.
So essentially you can go back and open them up and while he did there’s a bunch of other junk in there that we cleared out and I essentially hung my head over a trash can and let all this. Gross tweezing leave my body. I did get sick which we knew we there was the possibility of that and really only for a couple of days did I feel like garbage and then my real journey to healing myself in getting well again began again that was in 94.
It did not have a sinus infection again, and I did not go to a traditional medical doctor at all. Oh gosh. I haven’t other than having a kid. So that counts otherwise, I didn’t have a sinus infection till 2007 which is when I was working on my board certification in sports medicine just lots of stress which will suppress your immune system and probably eating a little bit more carbohydrate than what I should which will also suppress your immune system.
Well, lo and behold I ended up with a sinus infection. I actually even lost my voice completely while in the middle of doing my practical exam, which was not awesome, but I got home. Beat up my nutrition to help support my immune system tidied up my diet in less than a week. I was fine never went into the doctor for that.
So when being nutrition and what I know dietary wise and what. That doer of Chiropractic opened up to me absolutely changed the trajectory of my life. I’m sitting here in front of you today doing what I’m doing because of dr. John so I have a huge thank you to him. He gave me back my life and it’s time to pay it forward.
I’ve been paying it forward in the office here for gosh last well since 2005, so going on for a while. But it’s bigger guys. I am hoping to get this message out and help as many people as I possibly can because people just don’t know to know like we had fallen victim to this the thought process of oh as I get older.
I’m just expected to have these things. So it’s just because I’m getting old or when kiddos are born and they are dealing with here infections or they’ve got where they’re spitting up excessively maybe even colicky babies there that’s assumed is and normal because so many babies. These issues no, they’re not normal at all.
That just makes it common anytime your body gives you a symptom that’s his way of warning you that there’s a problem. We don’t just have symptoms because it’s expected to be normal. We have symptoms because there’s something that’s not working correctly in our body and it’s my job and my hope to be able to have it be my job to be your investigator and to be able to sit down and really go through and figure out what is going on with his body.
And why asked the wise why is it behaving this way what has happened to it throughout life that has made this a possibility if we can figure out the whys and we can start. Basically back down the path of unwinding this and you don’t have to succumb to that. I’m just getting older Theory or it runs in my family Theory.
But by the way genetics they do not have near the impact and Carry near the weight of what we’ve given them. We have the ability to turn genes on and off. So essentially what that means is what you choose to do every single day the environment you live in the food you eat how you sleep how you manage stress?
Lots of other things but some of the big variables right there that is gonna dictate if you’re healthy or not. Not what your jeans say not how you were raised not what Society is telling us and if you feel crummy right now and you’ve gone into your doctor and they’ve done Labs on you like oh, yeah.
You’re totally fine. No no, no. Our standard of care has shifted because we have a like let me ask you a question are Americans getting any healthier as time goes on or would you say they’re getting sicker? Yeah, they’re getting sicker. So our standards are care labs this lab work specifically like those ranges.
The clinical range is that everybody goes by those are the the way they find him. It’s the average of the average population. Well, the average population is 6 so congratulations the average of sick population. And if you fall within that range, you’re just the average of a Sikh population not average of healthy population.
And if you feel like crud, and there’s nothing that comes back out of those ranges. You’re just not sick enough for the standard of care do anything yet? – that’s getting into another episode right there. So be bringing more back on that information as well. But ultimately because of dr. John and and thinking outside of the box and not being stuck to the standard of care.
We figured out what was wrong with me and I got my life back and. I want to pay it forward. I want to be able to share with you that’s part of the purpose of this podcast in these videos is to be able to just share with you the information that I’ve learned over gosh since 94 which was like forever ago so that you guys know to know the mean part of it is not your fault.
