Statistics show 42% of American adults are deficient in vitamin D. Based upon my clinical experience, I would say that statistic is very low. Most people are familiar with vitamin D being crucial for ideal bone and teeth health, but did you know vitamin D has a multitude of other benefits that prove much more critical for optimal health.

    Vitamin D

    • Helps reduce the risk of diabetes. Did you know If you have diabetes you are twice as likely to have dementia and alzheimers down the road?
    • Helps with weight loss and our ability to burn fat.
    • Helps reduce or prevent cancer which is the #2 leading cause of death in the US — our cells talk to each other all day long – vitamin D slows down new blood vessels of cancer containing tissues and blood flow to cancerous tissue which also reduces the potential of the cancer to spread & increases the rate of death for these tissues
    • Improves cardiovascular health, #1 killer in the US, and has been for decades
    • Helps boost your immune system, reduce risk of cold and flu.
      • It is a natural antibiotic
      • The first few days you are coming down with something, mega dose on Vitamin D for a couple of days, without risk of overdosing on it and it building up in your system, as it is a fat soluble vitamin. By doing this your giving your body the ability to actually fight off whatever the infection is.
      • A randomized control trial on kids showed that vitamin supplementation along with vitamin D reduced the risk of influenza specifically by 40%
      • That works far better than a flu shot people. Have you looked at those states? Vitamin D is also far less invasive.
      • In order to help boost your immune system you want to make sure those vitamin D levels are at an optimal level.

When I test Vitamin D levels on my patients, almost all of the time they come back low. That is huge.

Ways to get Vitamin D include:

    • The sun which is synthesized in our skin when we are exposed to the sun
    • Cod liver oil
    • Mackerel, Salmon and Tuna
    • Supplementation

These are just a few different areas Vitamin D can help. Hopefully you’ll see with the above information the importance of knowing your current vitamin D level. If you don’t know, get it tested. It is a blood test I run on all of my patients. It is part of our comprehensive health assessment which helps measure your overall health. If you’re not testing, you’re guessing.
