The brain is continuously changing and being “remodeled” as well. Science is realizing our daily routines, be them good or bad, are changing how our brains work. What does this all mean to you? You have the power to influence just how well your brain works and how healthy it remains or becomes. Let’s first look at some interesting facts about your brain:
- Lack of oxygen to the brain for 5 to 10 minutes will result in permanent brain damage.
- Your brain keeps developing until you’re in your late 40’s.
- New brain connections are formed every time you form a new memory.
- Your brain uses 20% of the total oxygen and blood in your body.
- When awake, the human brain generates enough electricity to power a small light bulb.
- 70% of your brain is fat.
- 20% of your brain is cholesterol.
- Scientists say dieting could force your brain to eat itself.
- The human brain has the same consistency as tofu.
- The smell of chocolate increases theta brain waves, which trigger relaxation.
- Sphenopalatine Ganglioneuralgia is the scientific term for a “brain freeze”
- There is no left brain/right brain division. It’s a myth, they work together.
- A study has shown that long-term use of cell phones significantly increases the risk of developing brain tumors.
- Sleep deprivation impacts the brain in multiple ways that can impair judgment and slow reaction time.
- It only takes 6 minutes for brain cells to react to alcohol, which is toxic to the brain.
- When you learn something new, the structure of your brain changes.
- We have more brain cells as a baby than we ever will have again.
- In 2015, the 4th most powerful computer took 40 minutes to simulate just 1 second of human brain activity.
- The human brain consists of nearly 1 billion neurons plus a trillion glial cells.
- At rest, your brain uses 1/5 of a calorie per minute.
Your brain is responsible for directing the operations of the entire human body 24/7. Every beat of your heart, every blink of your eye, every breath you take and every thought that runs through your mind all originate from the brain. The brain is the conductor of the orchestra, your body. This alone should be reason enough to start focusing on ensuring the health of your brain, a subject that is just starting to be talked about.
Right now, there are millions of people across the world suffering from dementia/Alzheimer’s. According to the World Alzheimer’s Report, this number will reach as high as 65.7 million by 2030. Currently, it’s estimated that 5.4 million Americans may be at risk simply because of It seems as though we’re taught to simply live life however we want to and then if you develop some form of malady, there will be a “medical fix” for you. There is NO treatment for Alzheimer’s disease whatsoever. So, what can a person do? Dr. David Perlmutter, MD, world-renowned neurologist and author of Grain Brain and Brain Maker, has been teaching for years that you can prevent dementia and Alzheimer’s simply by making a choice every day to live a healthy lifestyle.
I believe many people really are trying to attempt just that but are being derailed by the ever-changing advice that is coming out regularly about what is good versus what is bad and it continues to be very conflicting. No wonder we’re not doing a good job decreasing the rates of this disease and many others. An area of study that is still relatively young in medicine is the study of epigenetics.
To keep it simple, you’re not “locked” into what your DNA says about you. Sure, you may have a gene that is associated with Alzheimer’s, but that does not mean you are destined to end up with Alzheimer’s or any other disease you may be genetically predisposed to. Epigenetics is the study of gene expression. You see, genes are either “turned on” or “turned off”. When a gene is “turned on”, it’s allowed to “express” itself. This means that whatever that particular gene is coded for, or what it represents we’ll say, will be displayed in the body. For example, if a gene is coded for Alzheimer’s and is “turned on”, that person will show symptoms of Alzheimer’s. What’s incredibly important is that if the gene stays “turned off”, the person will not show symptoms or signs of Alzheimer’s.
Science is realizing this detail is much more important than simply what genes a person may have. It’s whether or not these genes are “turned on” or “turned off” that matters. Do you know what’s really cool and, in my opinion, very empowering? We have full capability of controlling our genes by what we decide to do every day.
