Be honest, are you drinking half of your body weight in ounces per day of WATER? Are you avoiding caffeine, alcohol, and sugar?
If you answered NO to any of the above, you could be doing yourself a HUGE disservice without even fully recognizing it.
The average adult body is composed of 50-65% water, which makes it essential for surviving. The majority of Americans are dehydrated for one reason or another. Dehydration can lead to decreased mental capacity, can contribute to brain fog and short-term memory issues, decreased ability to focus and concentrate and negatively impacts overall performance.
An easy way to know if you’re hydrated, check the color of your urine. Does it look more like pale lemonade or more the color of apple juice? You are shooting for pale lemonade coloring so if it’s darker, drink more WATER.
A more scientific way to check-in, especially after workouts or days out in the sun, weigh yourself. If you’ve lost weight during the activity, it’s all related to water and you’re dehydrated. Try to increase the amount of water intake during your next workout or outing.
Dehydration is serious and can land you in the hospital if you’re not careful.
Warning signs you’re heading down a dangerous path are the following:
- No longer needing to urinate or having very dark urine
- Feeling dizzy
- Rapid heartbeat
- Rapid breathing
- Sunken eyes
- Sleepiness
- Lack of energy
- Confusion or irritability
- Fainting
Don’t let it get to this point. Consistency is the key. Drink throughout your day, every day. Front-load it so you are not up in the middle of the night emptying your bladder. An easy suggestion for helping you get your water intake in for the day. Keep a bottle of water on your nightstand. In the morning, before you get out of bed, drink the whole bottle of water.
Does anyone have any other tricks for getting your water in for the day? Please share them in the comments below. Thank you!
