Are you a sweet treat fan but know you shouldn’t be caving in on those sugary cravings?
Maybe you’ve already heard about one of the latest natural sugar replacements on the market?
Monk fruit is a unique low glycemic alternative that contains no sugars even though it comes from fruit.
This unique sweetener is actually an antioxidant with an extremely sweet taste and can be found in numerous low carb recipes.
It’s safe to use and is showing some promise in aiding in weight loss, reducing inflammation and helping fight free radicals.
There’s a problem though…
You’ll often find monk fruit sold WITH erythritol.
Erythritol is one of the many sugar alcohols that is also zero calorie because your body doesn’t have an enzyme to break it down and absorb it.
Companies have added this sugar alcohol in to help reduce how sweet monk fruit is on its own.
So what’s the problem you ask?
This sugar alcohol has been recognized by the FDA as “generally safe”, but there are risks and side effects you should be aware of…
- Usually genetically modified from cornstarch, which is linked with many potential health problems.
- Can cause gastrointestinal problems.
- May trigger allergic reactions
- Not safe for dogs/pets
My recommendation, get monk fruit WITHOUT erythritol and adjust your amounts accordingly.
I use this in my cooking on a regular basis. It’s a crowd pleaser every time.
