In 2016, I found myself in the hospital fighting a life-threatening infection as a result of taking a spill while running in the snow on my favorite trail in the front range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains. The doctors were stumped as to what I had gotten myself into and wrote it off as just a fluke. Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time, or was it? Was the infection just the result of bad luck or was there more to the story?
