How many of you find yourself racing through most of your meals because you’ve got other things to do? Or, are you the multi-tasking eater, eating while working or taking care of other jobs while you eat?
Did you know that it’s not just what you eat that matters? HOW you eat is another critical detail that can help build up your health or slowly widdle away at it.
You can eat all of the healthy food you want, but if you’re not adequately chewing your food, you can be causing indigestion, bloating, and lack of nutrient absorption.
Digestion begins in your mouth. The saliva you produce contains important enzymes that help break down your food. The more you chew, the more enzyme-rich saliva you produce. The better coated your food is in saliva, the better your digestion will be.
We need to practice “mindful eating”. One way to help slow you down and be more mindful is to chew each bite 25 times. Have you ever tried this? It feels like you’re taking FOREVER to chew one bite. That’s the point!
Not only is this going to support the beginning process of digestion, but this is HUGELY associated with weight loss or maintaining a healthier weight. By chewing slowly and being more present while you eat, you are giving your brain a chance to realize you’ve consumed food. If you’re hurrying your meal along, you’ll end up overeating simply because you’re not allowing your brain the time it needs to process that you’ve consumed food and that you’ve consumed enough calories and are full.
Give it a whirl. What do you have to lose besides maybe a few unwanted pounds? 😉
Here’s to being Healthy!
