The US spends almost THREE times more on healthcare than any other country in the world but ranks LAST in life expectancy among the 12 wealthiest industrialized countries!
In 2016, the U.S. spent $3,337 billion, or 17.9 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP), on national health expenditures, of which $329 billion was spent on prescription drugs.
Over the next decade, however, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) projects that spending for retail prescription drugs will be the fastest-growing health category and will consistently outpace that of another health spending.
The CDC contributes part of the decline to these top 3 issues:
- Overdose on opioids. These drugs continue to be prescribed at TRIPLE the amount compared to 1999.
- Liver Disease – This is a growing epidemic and results from numerous contributing factors. A few of the main ones, prescription drug use, obesity & alcohol consumption.
- Suicide rates continue to increase. So sad, but true. The rate has increased by 33% since 1999. In 2017 alone, it increased by 3.7% here in the US while the rate worldwide is decreasing.
Clearly, the US could stand for some improvements in the realms of health. It’s really not that difficult either. Clean living holds the key to not becoming a statistic. The information shared here will help guide you on your way.
