Alright, let’s get started

Okay, so food sensitivity testing is something I get asked about all of the time by my patients and other people who know that this is the round that I am in and they’re wanting to know what is my opinion do I think it’s valid do I think that’s what’s going to solve their problem.

Is that the. Like is that the best place to start like where we begin? So I figured we would just do an episode about this because it is becoming more well known about and a lot of people are seeming to actually have food sensitivities. So where exactly does this fit. So first of all, back when I began my whole path on this holistic approach to healthcare food sensitivity.

Testing is something that actually was done on me. Now picture 14 year old athlete who’s barely making it through a half day of school on six medication go to a chiropractor never been to one before my papa was going there. So he. Like like nude and trusted him so we did as well but I had been told that all of this was in my head and I was just making things up and you know, hey, you’re making it up.

But when you get back from your trip down to Arizona to visit your papa after, you know Christmas happens, if you’re not better, you should do IV drugs and if that doesn’t take care of it, then you should actually have sinus surgery because that’s going to fix the problem that we think is just in your head.

I don’t know. I know that sounds really harsh. But this is the reality that I was in at 14 years old. So when I went to dr. John.  There was a battery of tests that we’re done to try to figure out what actually is going on with this kid and included in the battery of testing was food sensitivity.

Testing I got. A page and a half worth lying like single-lane spaced of foods. I couldn’t eat and guess what they were all the food. I was eating. You know, this is back in the day where while still people think that carb loading is necessary, but I was in a competitive athlete and that was very much the thought process.

So I was living on bagels and fruit during the day and then we always had pasta least most nights with our dinner just angel hair pasta with nothing really on it other than a little bit of but that was. A staple in there. Well, one of the things that Lite me up like a Christmas tree is gluten and a lot of the other grains in yeast and sugar and like the on and on and on and on guys.

This is a 94 when this whole gluten-free thing wasn’t even a thing. Nobody even knew about it. I can’t even begin to tell you how overwhelmed and frustrated my mom and I were now I’ve done food sensitivity testing on my patients and I have had patients wear when they come back. It’s like, okay.

What am I supposed to eat? Like I’m sensitive to everything how in the world am I supposed to survive and if I have a patient who’s compliant enough like I was back in high school because I was out of pure desperation for something to actually work so I could you know function again I stuck to the plan but holy cow, was that rough and it was really really strict very difficult.

Lots of hair pulling out during that time. Very overwhelming and you know what for me at that point in time. It did help because food sensitivity test and let’s talk a little bit about that. This is not true allergy testing. If you have an allergy to something you generally already know what that is, especially when it comes to food because you have more of a true allergic response.

And worst form of that is the anaphylactic response with the throat the throat swelling shut and losing your Airway and you need an epi pen. So most common allergy for foods are your nuts and like your shellfish. There’s some other things in there, but those are the most common ones but food sensitivity testing is.

Horrible wax and food sensitivities themselves, it goes through a different immune pathway and there’s actually a few different Pathways that can go through but it doesn’t go through the legitimate allergy pathway as a result food sensitivities are generally a delayed reaction, which makes them much more difficult to really pinpoint what it is that’s set in somebody off these delayed reactions most commonly happen within the first 72 hours of consuming a.

Cooler food that you’re sensitive to but research has also shown it can take up to two weeks for a symptom to actually come into fruition from a food you consumed which makes it just ridiculously difficult to know what it is you’re sensitive to now the types of symptoms that you experience when you’re dealing with food sensitivities are not your classic allergic reaction types of.

Symptoms you could have something all the obvious the gut could not be happy. Most commonly people will end up with bloating some sort of gas constipation diarrhea and it’s not always immediate right because the delayed reaction, but did you know that brain fog short-term memory issues? Inability to sleep the way that you’re supposed to be hot flashes headaches heart palpitations joint achiness and just aches and pains throughout the body.

Did you know that all of those can be symptoms that result from consuming a food you’re sensitive to so that also makes it difficult because the symptoms that we experience are dependent upon the person and the part of the immune system that’s reacting and where. That immune systems Affinity is for basically creating problems a classic classic type of response for people who are sensitive to gluten is not necessarily a gut reaction.

There’s a high affinity for the nervous system. So here’s the thing with these immune reactions and why we now realize that gut health is kind of tied into all other Realms of what’s going on with you health-wise your gut is your main suit of armor, right is one of your main line of. Defense it is what keeps everything from the outside world, even though it’s inside your body.

It doesn’t get absorbed into your bloodstream. Unless the gut says it can which is great. If you’re just working the right way, they say that 80% of Americans have guts that are not working the right way. And that’s where the whole leaky gut syndrome comes into play where essentially basically there’s Pockets if you think of little slits where things can go into the bloodstream that shouldn’t be there and then an immune reaction actually happens is the result because your immune systems.

Like whoa, what is this? This doesn’t belong here. So a reaction happens. Well when it comes to gluten what they’ve realized is that that reaction doesn’t stay local in the gut it can which if it does those people end up with gut symptoms. But gluten has a high affinity for creating immune reactions that actually travel to the brain.

So a lot of people who have gluten sensitivities could end up with brain fog or me personally. I still very much have a gluten sensitivity I end up with almost an immediate migraine headache as a result of consuming it if I’m not paying attention or if I just decided I want to eat what I’m going to eat and then pay the price so better be really good and most of the time I just forego it because it’s not worth it.

So point being. Different types of foods can create reactions in other locations, but that also depends on the person. Whereas where is their vulnerability? And where does the immune system decide to go hang out at you know, immune reactions can go from the gut and go sit in your joints and that’s part of where the aches and pains can come from that’s another thing with people with gluten sensitivities have actually experienced but it comes with sugars and it comes with all other things as well.

So where does this fit because it is very much a part of the equation. But is it something we should do right off the get-go, or is it something we should do after the fact when we’ve tried to clean things up a bit? I don’t know right now. I do have a thought process on this what I can tell you is when I went to dr.

John. My body was a hot mess. My threshold was down very very much. So my gut was not working the way that it should I mean I have been annihilating it with medications for six years already at that point lots of antibiotics, which we know antibiotics totally destroy the guts ability to do its job.

So as a result of all of these things, I was very hyper sensitive my gut was so inflamed that it didn’t take much to set it off in my case. I. We did need to be on that strict of a diet to take away all the things that were offending my system at that point to point in time to give it the ability to actually heal.

Okay now. It is not where I generally start with my patients unless I have somebody who is severely messed up. Like I was we are going to drastically change their diet and ultimately I still won’t do food sensitivity with them necessarily at that point. I will just put them on an incredibly anti-inflammatory diet which in an anti-inflammatory diet majority of everything you’re consuming is not going to be considered an irritant to the gut.

So you’re going to help heal that which also helps decrease what you’re sensitive to so ultimately what I’m saying is. If I do food sensitivity testing right off the get-go. I am going to find a lot more sensitivities meaning I will find that this person has a lot more foods that their body considers an irritant at that point in time now patient compliance in general.

None of us are great about having to abide by certain rules and regulations and restrictions. And the last thing you want is for me to tell you you can’t have XY and z. Now psychologically, it seems to provoke that yeah, actually, I do want X Y and Z and I want I’m way worse now than before you told me I couldn’t have them.

So when there’s a laundry list patient compliance comes down and quality of life goes down and that’s not what this is about. This is about improving quality of life. But also helping you heal in the process. So what I know is if I clean up your diet. You know take away some things that I know are bad.

Like we all know that processed foods and fast foods are not things. We should consume on a regular basis. We also I think pretty much could agree upon that sugar is not something we should consume on a regular basis either. So if I get rid of some of the classic things that we know we should not be consuming on a regular basis in order to be healthy start there and work on the underlying cause of a person’s problem through other lifestyle modifications adding in you know, the nutrients we found that their body was lacking in based off of their comprehensive lab analysis, you know, start pulling out some of the other offenders in their system.

Like if they showed they had issues with toxicities slowly. Pulling that out. We’re going to also help the body heal. And what happens is most often. I don’t have to do food sensitivity testing if we take away what we know is already bad and we heal the body up from that standpoint. Foods are not really an issue anymore.

The only time I will do food sensitivity testing at that point is we’ve gone through, you know, a few months worth of working on healing somebody and things just aren’t responding the way that I would expect them to I might at that point decide to do a food sensitivity test to see what are the couple of things.

Because it should be more like a couple of things versus a page and a half list that I had at that point that they are sensitive to and they may be things that are just completely off the beaten path like you’re sensitive to avocados or you’re sensitive to you know, I don’t know mung beans and something you eat all the time we go.

I we don’t know so that’s where I feel like food sensitivity. Testing has a more appropriate fit is after. You’ve already worked at helping somebody’s level of Health improved and there’s something that’s just not responding the way you’d expect at that point. Again. Like I said, you will have raised the threshold of the body so much that there may be only a couple of things that that particular person legitimately has problems with.

Now in the beginning when they were a hot mess, yes, they would have legitimately had problems with a whole like slew of things but that wasn’t the cause of why they were a mess is ultimately the other thing I’m getting at here food sensitivities wreak havoc on our system, but they’re not generally why we’re sick.

Part of why we have food sensitivities is because we are sick and things are not operating the way that they should. So again this comes back to cause versus symptoms. Is it the cause or is it more a symptom of a bigger underlying issue that’s going on with us? Okay, and it’s not to say that taking those Foods away wouldn’t help.

But is it ultimately fixing the underlying cause of the problem more than likely not it’s more than just food sensitivity testing. So hopefully that helps bring about a little bit of clarification like food sensitivity. Testing really does have a place but I don’t think it should be the entry point to trying to help remedy somebody’s issues now that said, Somebody generally will always benefit from cleaning up a diet.

There is nothing that can go wrong with taking, you know substances that we know we shouldn’t be consuming so that absolutely that to me is not food sensitivity testing. That’s just eating more of the way that we know we’re supposed to. Okay, so hopefully that also makes sense. There is so much to be said for diet.

We are what we eat really we are so. Are you paying attention to what you’re actually putting in your face 3 to 5 times a day because it really matters and that my friends as we continue on this journey with us. Are you really healthy show? You’re going to hear me come back to over and over and over again.

It is one of the biggest variables that makes or breaks our health. We make that decision every single day multiple times a day. What are we putting in our face? So think of that and then let me know if you have questions about food. Also with that there are several different ways to do food sensitivity testing.

So as far as validity in that goes if I were to do food sensitivity testing one, it’s expensive guys. So also another reason not for it to be my initial go to but also. I like to use Labs that look at multiple Pathways versus just one because if there is a bigger issue if we look at multiple Pathways more than likely we will actually find the sensitivity versus it, you know, we test one particular pathway in the immune system and it actually is a reaction that occurs on a different pathway.

Okay, and that may or may not make sense. But no in the Realms of food sensitivity testing. There are several different ways that they do these tests and there are different Pathways in the immune system that those reactions can occur on and knowing that also helps. Bring more validity to the information you get from your test.

So again, hopefully that helps and I appreciate you being here. Greatly. I hope that you’re enjoying the content. I always would love to have feedback. So please reach out.
