008 – Quality Matters

Hey, it’s Dr. Kelly. And today we’re going to be talking about quality of supplementation. Does it really matter where you get your supplements from?

Hi, it’s Dr. Kelly Shockley with https://areyoureallyhealthy.com where I expose the real truth and the realm of health and Empower you with insight and knowledge. So you can take back control of your health and when the highest quality of life for the rest of your life now, if you’re new here, make sure you click that subscribe button, and all of the links referenced in this video will be found in the description box.

Alright, let’s get started. Okay. So here’s the big deal like supplementation. I’ve mentioned before it is necessary in today’s world and how we’re living in nutrients oils being depleted and Foods  being hybridize that they’re not producing as much nutrient dense foods is what they wants were so it has become a very relevant topic and it is something that I believe is necessary.

Not necessarily every supplement Under the Sun. Do you need to be taking but there are specific nutrients that we. Not get even if were having the most perfect diet. So if you missed that topic go back to look for it. I already did a little show for you on is supplementation necessary and I go through and explain a bit more the reasoning and the thought process behind that and then I also touch base on which nutrients do you need to be supplementing bare minimum right now?

So today what I want to focus in on is where in the world should you buy your nutrition from supplementation? Because it’s such a huge Market you can pretty much. In vitamins and other nutrients anywhere from Big warehouse sales types of stores to your grocery store to the health food store from Health Care practitioners all over the Internet.

So how do you know what you’re getting is what you actually need and does quality actually matter when it comes to nutrition. So few different thought processes one FDA does approve the industry. There are certain regulations criteria. That should be being met but it’s not something that’s heavily scrutinized.

So when it comes to different companies and who you’re choosing to use your there’s no gold standard for what should be being done and there’s no way to enforce that. It’s actually being done. So it does have an effect on the. You’re actually taking there have been studies done that randomly different nutrients at grocery stores have been purchased and then tested to see if those products are in fact what they’re saying, they are and 80 some odd percent of the time they were found that they were not they were either not in the dosing that they labeled on the bottle or they didn’t contain all of the nutrients.

They claimed that they were so is. I was kind of a big issue and you know in the Realms of supplementation. There is this argument that you know, when you take nutrients they can cause all these bad things to happen to or where these reactions are actually coming from. My personal opinion is that reactions come from taking things that one you don’t know if you really need it or not.

But I think it comes from the fact that this industry is not as regulated as what it should be and that there are subpar nutrients being sold. And ultimately what I’m saying is I don’t know that necessarily it’s the nutrient fault but a lot of companies are using fillers and binders and other preservatives additives to.

Stabilize these products to add bulk to these products to help cheap in the product for them. So I feel like when reactions happen that a lot of the time this is more coming from all the other stuff that’s being put into a supplement versus the actual effect or impact of the nutrient itself. There are nutrients that you can take into high of quantity.

There is that this is why you shouldn’t necessarily be self-medicating with nutrition. Even though we think of nutrition as being like safe. It’s not a medication. It is a nutraceutical your body is going to utilize it like it’s concentrated in its form. This is why there’s the argument like it’s best to get all your nutrients from your food.

Yeah because it helps regulate this process. So you brought to you Lee uses what it needs. You don’t have to worry about toxicity types of effects. Like for example your fat soluble. Is a d e and K. You can get too much of in your system. You don’t just simply excrete them out. If your body has excess like you would the water soluble vitamins, which is why I like some of the Natural Energy drinks that are out there have 440 thousand percent of your vitamin B12.

Daily requirement like that’s extreme levels of vitamin B12 doing that gives a boost to the system and we don’t have to worry about a toxicity effect so much because your body is just going to eliminate that through your urine in excess which is why people get super colorful urine at times when they’re taking huge doses of Vitamin B vitamins, but the point being is there are certain nutrients that can accumulate in the system.

So this comes back to like you shouldn’t be taking nutrition unless you know what you’re doing. If you’re not testing you are guessing one you’re guessing at what nutrients your body needs and higher amounts than what you could get out of your diet and to your also adjust it, you know baptism by fire shotgun approach to health.

You have no clue what your body needs how your body is responding to it. When does your body not need certain nutrients anymore, which is what we do in our office. It’s why we have the comprehensive lab analysis so I can. Keep tabs on me patient see where they’re at from a physiological blueprint standpoint know what they’re needing.

And then retest to make sure that once things have balanced back out and they’re able to maintain that through proper diet lifestyle factors that we take that excess nutrients back out of the equation. So it doesn’t cause problems. So there’s that side of it. So back to this whole world of supplementation and regulation what are things that you could be looking for?

I went with the manufacturers that we utilize in our office because of their certifications that they do have. So one of the most common ones that you should be looking for is GMP that stands for good manufacturing practices. It is an FDA regulated type certification. So there are standards that are being met or should be being met to say.

Yes. They are following good manufacturing practices. And NSF sport have to do with another set of criteria. These are a lot of companies that deal with Physicians. These are certifications that they have one of the companies that I have also has what’s known as the TGA certification which is supposed to be like the hardest certification to acquire in the world.

TJ is Australia’s equivalent to our FDA. Very strict and stringent rules and criteria to be met and satisfied. So when you’re looking at a particular company do some research to see if they have any certifications that validate them as a company something else to look for is do they have a board of Physicians that is conducting research and helping oversee and monitor the production of the products within this manufacturers line.

It’s one thing for a company to just come up with like oh, yeah, we need Vitamin D. Everybody knows we need Vitamin D. That’s fine. But when you’re looking at more therapeutic forms of supplementation, it’s really helpful to have Physicians on a board that are from different disciplines within medicine that are helping oversee control regulate, you know, and it’s really helpful if they’re actually practicing like they have their own clinics.

So they’ve got real world clinical experience. Not just you know hanging out in a lab There’s real practical like real life practical application. So I would look for that. And then I would look to see what kind of testing do they actually do on their products. So for example, one of the main manufacturers that I use when they get their raw goods and there are certain criteria that has to be met before those raw Goods could even come into the manufacturing facility.

They do get raw goods from around the world and they’re always looking for organic or what the equivalent is of organic if it’s coming from somewhere where they don’t have those types of Standards, you know organic World Trade, Um also looking for green friendly suppliers, so. That type of criteria has to be met before those raw Goods can even set foot into the manufacturing facility.

Once those raw goods come into the facility. They go into quarantine and they go through a battery of tests. Not only from our current manufacturer, but the manufacturer sends. Samples of all these raw materials to Independent testing facilities third-party independent testing facilities that are not being paid by the manufacturer mind you they are independent their job is to test the raw material and give feedback on here’s what it is.

Here’s the percentage. Here’s the Purity and anything else that they’re wanting to know. So very strict stringent testing. Procedures and also qualifications for a raw good to even make it into the manufacturing production line. So if they get a raw good that meets all the standards they’ve set it does get rolled into production and whatever products nutrients, you know supplement types of products are being made with that raw good can now be manufactured.

However little bit of insight there are raw Goods that come in that do not meet the qualifications that they’ve set. So for example, there was a raw good that was touted as being like almost a hundred percent pure chondroitin sulfate, which that’s one of the supplements for you know joint health and dealing with arthritis and making sure your cartilage is staying healthy.

So super exciting because in the first round is that of testing it did test is like 99% pure chondroitin sulfate. Well, thankfully they. Don’t just stop at that first initial round of testing. There are several other rounds of testing that it goes through and in the second battery of tests. What they determined was it wasn’t chondroitin sulfate at all.

It was a filler that was manufactured to mimic chondroitin sulfate. So thankfully our manufacturing facility has several layers of testing that is done and they were able to catch it. But here’s the thing with in the supplement World, which is also very frustrating to me and I think where we get suckered as customers and why we don’t get one either the improvements that were expecting the benefits from taking a certain product and those nutrients like we don’t get those the way that we would expect or maybe we have a bad reaction.

So this. Act was rejected by our manufacturing facility, but there are no laws in place as of this moment. I know they’re trying to change this but that seller of that raw good can turn around and sell that raw material to a different manufacturing facility. Maybe that manufacturer only has the first rounds of tests.

Maybe they don’t have battery of tests. Maybe they don’t do third-party independent testing. And so for them this may get through the initial rounds of testing. And now they’re going to produce a product containing this chondroitin sulfate that is really not chondroitin sulfate. So whatever product contains this in the consumer, they’re not going to get any benefit at all and potentially depending on how that filler reacts with different people.

They may have negative reactions. So right now there’s not a law in place that says if a raw good has been rejected by any manufacturer it’s disposed of this is what’s trying to be changed in this realm which will do all of us so much good if it makes. Throat, so hoping and praying that happens.

So. Look for that with your manufacturer see what kinds of testing they do. Do. They actually have their products their raw Goods third-party independently tested if they do cool that they’re totally on the right track. So one of our main manufacturers to on the other end. So once this raw good goes in its produced into whatever products it’s going to be included in at the back end before any products ever get released to me or any of the other Physicians that are utilizing this company’s.

And they get tested again. It’s a whole battery of other tests and guess what their third party independent tested to and part of the testing is to make sure that the nutrients and are in the dosing that we are claiming that they’re in which our therapeutic dose that it has no binders or fillers or anything in there and the NSF sport certification that this particular manufacturing facility has means that there is nothing that is on the.

Absence list for athletes, you know elite pro Olympic level athletes not one of those substances on the banned list is in that manufacturing facility ever. So these products are considered considered clean and safe for athletes of that caliber to be using because there will be nothing that comes back in their blood test that shows they’ve been utilizing banned substances.

Okay. So on the flip side with these products it’s going through all that scrutiny again, shelf life is being. Stood also like the capsules that they use are being tested to make sure that they are breaking down in the system where they’re supposed to be. So that nutrients can be absorbed in their proper locations where the body will have the best ability to absorb them.

So a lot of thought process a lot of testing and independent party testing and retesting again before anything ever gets rolled out for us to be able to supply to you. So when you’re looking at a manufacturer, that’s another thing to look at again beginning an end type of testing. Is there a board of Physicians?

and then the other thing that goes into this too is I personally feel like professional grade nutrition is. The best starting point when it comes to buying nutrition where can you actually find these types of quality nutrients which are not necessarily the most expensive but the highest quality are not generally going to be found in your bulk good stores.

They’re not generally going to be found at the grocery store you may or may not find them on the internet. I have something to say about purchasing things off of non manufacturers or non-physician sites that I’ll share. In a second, but the main thing is if you’re going to take a nutraceutical you want the cleanest purest best quality that you can because you want to get the results that you should be getting you want what is expected and you don’t want a murky the waters.

You don’t want to put substances in the body that have no business being there. So for example, There is a krill oil out on the market that you can purchase at most stores. It’s one of the best-known and if you look at the ingredients not just like nutrition facts, but the actual ingredients of what is in this product.

Also, you’ll find that it had it contains red. Dye number 40. I don’t know about you, but personally I don’t think you’d be should be supplementing your diet with red. Dye 40. So that’s also something to look for when you’re looking at nutrition. Are they using any of the allergens? So soy wheat Dairy shellfish type products, which some of them are going to contain shelf shellfish type products, but for the most part you can stay away from those things.

Also, are they using artificial sweeteners or flavors or. Coloring any of the dyes. You shouldn’t be using that in your nutrition. Are they adding in sugars? That’s something that we don’t even think about looking at within our supplements, but I believe me it’s there, especially when you’re looking at kids nutrition because often it’s got to taste good.

So just other details ingredient-wise to look for now when it comes to buying online, Here’s just some things to think about once a nutrient leaves, wherever you’re buying it from it could be sold to anybody and when it’s out of the initial manufacturers control. We don’t have any control over what happens to that so say somebody buys something off of one of the most commonly used websites for purchasing where things can be delivered within just a couple of days conveniently to your household.

But let’s say this person buys a fish oil and they live in Arizona and it’s the middle of summer. And they didn’t really know if they wanted a fish oil but they saw something on you know, an infomercial is like, oh gosh, that sounds really good. I think I’m going to do that. So they buy up a bunch and they get it and it sits in their car and they don’t really like taking pills and it just sits in the car morning noon and night.

It’s in the car. It’s going through high levels of heat sitting in the car and we know the heat is actually concentrated in the car and they eventually get around to the faculty. Don’t want this so they send it back. So.  the manufacturer the well. The warehouse look call it that or the Distribution Center we can call that they get it back.

They put it back on the shelf and it gets sold so it goes to somebody else. When it’s outside of my control or the actual manufacturers control and it goes to a distribution center where you’re buying it Off the Shelf at a market and it comes back you have no idea what’s happened to that product while it wasn’t on the Shelf fish oils do not do well in heat.

So maybe just buying directly from the source would save you any potential issues with buying something that is rancid and you would have had no idea the Distribution Center would have had no idea so. There’s that thought process for you as well. I really think the best places to buy your nutrients or supplements from would be natural health care providers because generally they have access to the professional grades that you can’t just buy off the shelf and like our manufacturer police this.

Very intensely you shouldn’t be able to find their stuff on the internet at all unless it’s tied to one of their Physicians and it’s because of that quality control factor that they want so much for you guys is the consumer they want to make sure you’re getting the results that you’d expect and one way to help that with all of in addition to the testing that’s been done is to make sure that it is in anybody else’s hands before it actually makes it to you besides the physician.

So Natural Health Care Providers, or if you’re going to go somewhere else. If you don’t have a natural healthcare provider that is close to your that you know of one I can ship anywhere heck we’ve even ship stuff over to Afghanistan so you can get in contact with me. I’d be happy to take care of that side of the equation for you or go to one of your natural health food stores and speak to the person in charge of the supplement section to get more guidance on the.

Is that excuse me that are there? They could probably answer some of the questions that I listed out for you like Board of Physicians testing procedures and any other certifications that they may actually hold they should be able to help you with that. Those are really the only places I would be buying nutrition from that I would feel comfortable buying nutrition from my patients that I currently work with.

There’s certain nutrients that I need them to get from the health food store. So that’s where I have them go. I don’t have them go anywhere else. Beyond that, so hopefully this is provided a little bit of insight and Clarity on the realm of nutrition and why maybe it doesn’t work as effectively as what people think or where there’s the scare of the reactions like they are nutraceuticals.

They are a natural medicine so they should be treated in that realm. They shouldn’t just be taken haphazardly. You shouldn’t just buy them from anybody. You should know what you’re getting yourself into and ultimately at the end of the day, you should really be doing some testing to see. Exactly.
