The first thing that comes to mind when you think of gluten is a delicious, fluffy loaf of bread. The second thing that comes to mind (if you’re not a baker) is probably something about gluten causing digestive distress or sending someone with celiac disease into anaphylactic shock.

If you’re reading this, it’s likely that you’ve already heard of the negative health effects of gluten. But what if I told you there were more?

Gluten can cause inflammation in your body and lead to a number of different diseases like anemia, arthritis, cancer and even depression. It also inhibits absorption of nutrients which is detrimental to any dieter. 

In addition to all of these health problems, gluten can also lead to weight gain and skin issues. Gluten makes you more likely to break out because it is a form of wheat which contains acne-causing hormones. It’s also known for causing hormonal imbalances in men when consumed at high amounts over long periods of time.

If you or someone close to you has been experiencing any chronic pain, it might be worth mentioning their diet to see if they’re consuming gluten on a regular basis.

What’s worse is that all these symptoms are often misdiagnosed by doctors because they don’t know about the connection between gluten intolerance and common illnesses.

A study published by the American Journal of Gastroenterology showed that gluten consumption increased body weight, fat mass, blood pressure and markers of inflammation such as C-reactive protein (CRP) in healthy individuals with no signs of celiac disease.

The most important thing to take away from this is that gluten has been linked with many different issues, not just stomach troubles and causes problems in most people, even those who are not intolerant or celiac.
